RARE - This word is used much too loosely
in collecting.
In 1998 while searching for CD's for our collection
we came up with a system on which we base how rare an item is by how
likely you are to find that item In The Wild.
It is a system which breaks down CD's by how often you would encounter them per
Discoteca you visit. For example you
would find 3 copies of a Very Rare CD in 100 Discotecas.
Meaning that if you spent a week and went to 33 different CD stores you
would probably find one copy. There are exceptions for this system
such as CD stores that are also distributors, the country of origin
versus the country you are shopping in and type of release. (Such as CD
singles, Special Editions, Test Markets, and Limited Edition CD's)
However this scale has been very useful to us over the years and fairly
accurate. This scale is only used for retail CD releases. Promo
CD's or Vinyl would not apply to this scale. We are mostly referring to CD's in their
original factory state but does include used CD's not in specialty
shops. (some CD's did
not originally come sealed in shrink wrap but had stickers sealing them).
NEW RELEASE -
95 of 100
This would be a new release or reissue within the first 18 months of
release.
COMMON -
75 of 100
This would be a new release or reissue that has been out for 2 - 4
years.
FAIRLY COMMON -
50 of 100
This would be a Limited Edition or CD single within the first 18
months of release. A CD that is 4 to 6 years old and recently out
of print.
UNCOMMON -
25 of 100
This is the category most little known artist new releases start in.
Newly released popular Import CD's. Newly discounted or marked out
CD's. CD's that have been out of print for at least 5 years.
Recently out of print Limited Editions, alternate covers (slip cases)
and CD singles.
RARE -
10 of 100
CD's that have been out of print for 7 years or more. Test Market
CD's. Limited Editions and CD singles that have been out of print
for 3 years or more. First printings (original releases) that are
5 or more years old.
VERY RARE -
3 of 100
CD's that have been out of print for 10 or more years or out of print
CD's that were released before 1995. Alternate versions of out of
print CD's or slip cases. Most CD singles that are over 7 years
old.
EXTREMELY RARE -
1 of 100
Most CD's released before 1991 would be in this category.
CD's this rare will typically not be found in the wild but will be found
either used or in Captivity (specialty shops, collectors, on-line stores
etc...).
You can try our system out if you live in or near an area that has over
100 Discotecas like Southern California or Mexico City. In areas
of less than 100 the scale will be off a little but still work.
Also, please note as stated earlier that Extremely Rare CD's will be
Fairly Common in Captivity. So, just because you see something
every week on eBay does not mean your local flea market will have a
dozen copies of them. Alternately, some areas where various genres of
Latin music are less popular you might stumble across a store with 5-25
copies of a Very Rare or Extremely Rare CD. |

a record company. Some record pools have their own in-house DJ's
